ASHA Connect

Challenge

The core challenge was to create a mobile app that could be easily used by non-technical community health workers (CHWs) who often had limited or no access to a stable internet connection. Despite these constraints, it was essential to enable CHWs to collect accurate health data in the field and later sync that data with a central server for monitoring by select-few doctors in the region, responsible for a population of over 35,000 patients.

The app needed to be both intuitive and efficient, empowering CHWs to record critical health data in remote settings, while ensuring seamless data management for the doctor.

UX Concept and Design
Apporach

To address these challenges, I ensured that the app was not only practical for CHWs but also scalable for broader implementation. We began by conducting extensive user research to understand the day-to-day experiences and challenges of CHWs, as well as the needs of the healthcare professionals monitoring the data.

The design process started with creating wireframe prototypes that were rigorously tested with the ASHA Nepal team and a select group of healthcare workers. We gathered feedback through real-world testing to iterate and refine the app.

To keep the interface accessible to non-technical users, we used simple visual cues and a simple logical user flow, allowing CHWs to easily navigate through the app even with minimal digital literacy. This approach ensured that the app could function under the constraints of limited internet access, while still meeting the core healthcare needs of the region.

Data Collection and Syncing

Once we successfully designed the app to allow CHWs to collect patient health data in the field, the next step was ensuring that this data could be synced reliably to a central server. We integrated a background syncing mechanism into the app, which allowed CHWs to collect data offline and automatically sync it when they gained access to a stable internet connection. This functionality ensured that data integrity was maintained, even in remote areas with unreliable connectivity.

Integrating Medicord: The Doctor’s Portal

To complete the healthcare ecosystem, we integrated the app with Medicord, a platform developed by my startup, to provide a doctor's portal. This web-based portal allowed the region’s doctors to view and manage patient data collected by CHWs. The portal was designed with a focus on simplicity and efficiency, enabling the doctor to view patient records, categorized by session and patient.

While the Medicord platform was not the primary focus of the project, its integration was crucial to ensure a seamless experience for the doctor, closing the loop on the data collected in the field.

Outcomes & Impact

By combining a user-centered design for community health workers with an efficient data management system for doctors, ASHA Connect has become an invaluable tool for delivering healthcare in rural Nepal. The app successfully supports a population of over 35,000 patients, with more than 200 mothers benefitting from the Safe Motherhood Program.

The app’s offline data collection and background syncing capabilities ensure that even in the most remote areas, patient data can be securely recorded and reviewed. The platform has been designed to be fully scalable, enabling the team to extend it into chronic disease monitoring and expand the model across additional rural regions, ultimately supporting wider access to quality healthcare.

What I learnt

As the CEO and Lead Product Designer, this project allowed me to deeply explore the intersection of design thinking and healthcare in underserved communities. Leading the design process from concept to implementation gave me invaluable experience in addressing complex problems with user-centered solutions, while navigating challenges such as limited infrastructure and resource constraints. This project reaffirmed my belief in the power of design-driven solutions to drive meaningful social impact.
