Reimagining test with Avyaas

Challenge

Avyaas is a digital learning platform initially launched as the flagship product of my startup, designed to support students preparing for highly competitive medical entrance exams in Nepal. Built with a focus on accessibility and performance tracking, it was later white-labelled by leading education providers, including the National Academy of Medical Education (NAME), one of the largest medical prep institutes in the country.

While Avyaas was built with strong adoption, we encountered a critical engagement issue during its implementation with NAME. Data revealed that over 55% of users were starting practice tests but not completing them. This was a significant red flag for a platform whose core value relied on students finishing these tests to gain insight and improve.

Duration

8 months

Our goal was to reimagine the entire test experience by shifting it from a high pressure simulation to a learning centered journey. This required designing an interface that encouraged reflection and learning from mistakes rather than focusing solely on scores. We began by conducting interviews with primary students from NAME institution and paired this with session recordings and completion funnel data.

The common theme we identified was a cluttered interface and a perception that the test was too long or too serious, leading to burnout.

We made some key design changes

To address the challenges identified, we implemented several key design changes focused on reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of progress and accomplishment. First, we introduced progressive disclosure, presenting one question at a time with clear visual indicators of progress. This helped reduce the sense of overwhelm students often felt when facing an entire test all at once.

We also refined the UI with cleaner layouts, improved typography, and better spacing to minimize cognitive load and keep students focused. A post-test feedback section was also introduced, delivering personalized insights after each test that highlighted incorrect answers, provided clear explanations, and offered targeted tips for improvement. This transformed each test into a more meaningful and actionable learning experience.

Outcomes & Impact

Following the redesign, test completion rates increased by over 25% across NAME’s user base within the first month. The average time spent per test session rose by 18%, indicating greater engagement and focus.

What I learnt

As a designer and founder, Avyaas reinforced the importance of understanding emotional context in educational technology. Performance anxiety, user motivation, and cognitive load aren’t just psychological terms, they’re product design problems.

Leading the redesign of the test experience helped me understand user behaviour very closely. The entire experience highlighted how small shifts in tone, structure, and feedback can change how users feel and act.

This project also laid the foundation for scaling Avyaas into a white-label platform, adaptable to other learning institutions across Nepal, reinforcing the value of design as a growth lever in education.
